Puerto Rico Rainforest

El Yunque.  Puerto Rico tropical rainforest is called El Yunque National Forest and is part of the U.S. Forest Service.  It is really worth a visit and is a great place to hike… yes you will get wet, even on a somewhat sunny day… Not far from El Yunque you can visit the Bioluminescent Bay at Fajardo.  You can go on a kayak tour at night or go on the eco-tour.  Bioluminescence is a rare phenomenon originated by microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates. These organisms light up when they are disturbed as a defense mechanism…. It is beautiful to see the phosphorescent lagoon. On the eco-tour you can learn how important it is for the environment to fight light pollution and for cities to minimize light at night.  You will also learn more about frogs, especially the famous Puerto Rican “Coqui” which has such a distinctive song … This one of a kind inspiring eco-tour is at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve.
