Zanzibar City, beautiful sadness

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Zanzibar City, Tanzania.   The heart of Zanzibar City called the Stone Town is a World Heritage Site.   You can feel the influence of the different colonial powers who controlled it, including the Portuguese, the Arabs and the British.  Stone Town is an interesting place but there is also a deep sadness about it.  Is it the remoteness of the place, the lack of a flourishing economy, the reminiscence of a troubled colonial past or having been the center of a slave trade…? Pay a visit to the monument to the slaves and the minuscule caves where dozens of slaves could be kept for days before being sold.  We stayed in the caves for a few minutes and started suffocating.  A reminder of how cruel human beings can be to each others.  Also pay attention to the doors, some are truly beautiful and also a reflection of the various cultural influences of the city.  The most colorful part of the city are the markets, where you can buy local spices (including amazing Zanzibar curry) for a bargain.   It is definitely worth a visit but may not be what you expect.

Bermuda Turtles and Mark Twain

Mark Twain about Bermuda:  You may want to go to heaven but I would rather go there…

Indeed Mark Twain loved the island and spent a lot of time in Bermuda.  The Hamilton Princess Hotel in Hamilton even has a Mark Twain suite, where Mark Twain allegedly used to stay.

When you fly to Bermuda one thing comes to mind:  all the stories you have heard about the Bermuda triangle, ships and aircrafts lost at sea… This is a fascinating place but most locals would laugh at you if you dare to mention the Bermuda triangle myth … although the bookstores have plenty of books about it.  It is apparently a very magnetic area… well this is one of the explanations… you will have to go and check it out for yourselves to hear more about the stories…Atlantis anyone?

Bermuda is amazingly rich in many ways.   The architecture is interesting and you clearly feel like you have not landed on a poor island when you step out of the airport.  The international financial activity is certainly helping more than tourism in that sense.   This is not a really cheap place and food prices easily compare to New York City.  Locals are really nice and friendly and you can walk out in the evening in Hamilton pretty safely.  For the little story, apparently Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones live in Bermuda most of the year with their children.  Since Bermuda was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption, the landscape offers many shapes and beautiful little islands.

My “coup de coeur” goes to the turtles.  You can spot them very easily on a boat tour but they have to be protected … especially from the jet skis.  Jet skis lovers out there please check out if the area you are in has turtles and make sure to go slowly when passing by turtles areas.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay, North Vietnam.  Halong Bay is classified as one of the seven wonders of the world.  It is indeed truly inspiring and a beautiful place.  However, please be aware of a few things.  First, during the winter months it can get pretty cold and humid, so come prepared!  Also, Halong Bay is about 4 hours by car from Hanoi, plan accordingly… some hotels told us it would only take 3 hours but it was really closer to 4 hours both ways, so don’t miss your flight on the way back!  I would not recommend spending a long time in Halong Bay, besides the bay there is really not much to do in town and the food is mediocre… it is also pretty dull and rundown, so don’t bother besides the bay.  Another thing, forget about the tourist pictures of red boats floating amidst the bay… there are no more red boats, they are all white (and getting old) because of a governmental decision!

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap, Cambodia.  Just loved the place!  I would go back anytime… I was there for 4 days and it was not enough time to visit all the sites… pretty good food options as well, many markets during the day and at night which make the city very lively.  You can use the tuk-tuk which are everywhere in the city (it is recommended to keep the same tuk-tuk all day for the sites visits).   Plus you cannot beat amazing foot massages for a few dollars!

For a great documentary on Angkor Vat, check out the Smithsonian Channel website.

Sintra, Portugal

Sintra, Portugal.  Sintra is located about 30 minutes from Lisbon but you feel so far away from everything.  This is a magnificent place and I ended up spending more time in Sintra than Lisbon.  It is classified by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This place is a true gem, I highly recommend it…

Port au Prince Haiti

Port au Prince, Haiti.  I just returned from Port au Prince, two years after the earthquake.   The state of the city is disturbing.  With all the international aid that was given to the country two years ago, you would expect reconstruction going on at a much faster pace.   Tents are still everywhere in the city, the infrastructure is terrible… sadly still a lot of poverty, chaos and despair… but a beautiful place in many ways.

Puerto Rico Rainforest

El Yunque.  Puerto Rico tropical rainforest is called El Yunque National Forest and is part of the U.S. Forest Service.  It is really worth a visit and is a great place to hike… yes you will get wet, even on a somewhat sunny day… Not far from El Yunque you can visit the Bioluminescent Bay at Fajardo.  You can go on a kayak tour at night or go on the eco-tour.  Bioluminescence is a rare phenomenon originated by microscopic organisms known as dinoflagellates. These organisms light up when they are disturbed as a defense mechanism…. It is beautiful to see the phosphorescent lagoon. On the eco-tour you can learn how important it is for the environment to fight light pollution and for cities to minimize light at night.  You will also learn more about frogs, especially the famous Puerto Rican “Coqui” which has such a distinctive song … This one of a kind inspiring eco-tour is at Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve.

Sedona — The Vortex Quest

Sedona, Arizona.  The Red Rocks almost make you feel like you landed on another planet… and the UFO stores keep this feeling going.  Sedona is a beautiful place, especially if you like hiking and want to go on a quest for a Vortex…The city is small so a few days should be enough to explore.  Try to avoid going in the summer as it gets quite hot, especially if you want to hike. The enchantment resort and its amazing spa should complement your visit nicely. I also recommend the Cessna plane ride to the Grand Canyon if you are feeling adventurous.
